[ARCHiVED] The Protagonist - A Rebours (1998)

GENRE..... Industrial, Martial, Modern Classical
LABEL...... Cold Meat Industry
MODE....... VBRkbps / Joint-Stereo
REL.DATE.. 03-12-2005

Although his past is linked to a more Industrial-toned
line of work, on his debut CD as The Protagonist, Magnus
Sundström has crafted a lush and epic work of
Neo-Classical countours. Orchestral string and brass
arrangements and bold percussions serve as the
background for narrations and declamations of poetry by
J.K. Huysmans, Edgar Alan Poe or Percy Bysshe Shelley,
combining the best of two worlds. Mark St. John Ellis'
(of Elijah's Mantle) interpretation of Shelley's
'Mutability' alone is worth the album, but the remaining
pieces are equally impressive; other contributions to
the album include the voice of Peter Pettersson of
Arcana for 'Song of Innocence', and the work of cellist
Marcus Ohlsson in a couple of pieces as well, among
others. There's more than a fair share of a
cinematographic mood to the music, as if one is being
served the soundtrack for a magnanimous epic, which is
at the same time gracious and soothing, but also
majestic and breathtaking in its severity and formalism
- the album throws the listener into a tense and
threatening setting, but will not leave him unescorted
throughout this dark and thrilling journey. A superb
work of Neo-Classical compositions, passionate,
intelligent and clearly very astutely put together,
which elevates The Protagonist to the leading role in
the genre.
