One monolithic 34-minute track from Inseminoid, who take
their name from one of my favorite sleazy Alien ripoffs
from the early 1980's, directed by the notorious British
cinema scum-monger Norman Warren. It's the duo of George
Proctor from Mutant Ape and Lee Stokoe from Culver and
the new Skullflower lineup, so I knew what to expect: it's
going to be noisy as fuck, and it's going to crush. A Mask
For Jennifer emerges as a thick rumbling hum of low-end
distortion and what sound like wailing voices way off in
the distance, a malevolent blackened ur-drone extending
into eternity. The rumbling, throbbing distorted noise
isn't as harsh and grating as you might expect, though;
instead, they've muted the sound a bit, softened the
churning mass of distorted frequencies and indiscernable
noises and subsonic throb into a fuzzier, foggier form of
crumbling wall noise. This kind of sounds like I'm putting
my ear up against the outer concrete wall of a rock club
while some unknown grindcore band is playing inside, the
blasting music washed out into this murky blur of super-heavy
fuzz. This isn't going to make a convert out of anyone that
doesn't have a taste for crushing, static, monotonous noise-drone,
but if you liked the recent Skullflower album on Utech, Lee Stokoe's
works and all things Militant Walls, you should check this out.
The CDR was released by At War With False Noise, so it looks
great - the disc is packaged in a simple two-part sleeve that
has a yellow vellum backing with Inseminoid's cool, crusty
logo along the side, and a hand-numbered insert card that
boasts some crazy, neon-colored abstract artwork. And it's
super-limited, of course: only 100 copies made.
