VA - A Purpose Not Necessary (Ltd. Edition) (2006)

GENRE..... Noise
LABEL...... Dada Drumming
MODE....... VBRkbps / Joint-Stereo
REL.DATE.. Oct-12-2008

Black Leather Jesus is up first with ôShelterö a wailing track of harshness that will
certainly at least send you running for shelter. This sounds like strait up no-holds-barred
pedal noise and it's nicely produced but doesn't really exhibit any sign of the 'ol ôextra
special touch.ö Basically it's relatively raw, could be recorded live, who knows. The track
does move along quite nicely first jamming some mid-level white tinged noise that jumps
around. The sound continues to move, not a lot but providing just enough frequency variation
to keep a minimal sense of moving forward. After about 5 minutes the track is reduced to
some crunchy low end rumbling that eventually builds back up to more harsher flowing
textures. This is eventually overtaken by muffled industrial drones and subtle metallic
movement. A varied track that evolves over time, but there's really nothing special or
original about it, even compared to Black Leather Jesus' previous material let alone noise
in general. A solid track though.

Incapacitants surprises you from behind and blasts right in with a thick rod of their token
junk metal harshness. It sounds great off the bat but it's not long before they have an
annoying throb of stupid tone pumping up the jams in full force. It kind of seems to dull
everything down a bit and eats up a lot of the mid to low end which poses a problem for me.
About 6 minutes in the sheet metallic feedback starts coming to the forefront a bit more and
jamming rusty metal deep under your finger nails. My new roommate accurately describes the
sound as ôa steel mill being rapedö as he makes a futile attempt to end the atrocity.
Remember kids, noise pushes those that are close to you away. Deeper into the scrap yard
Incapacitants unveil some nice panning that kind of gradually introduces itself. This is a
pretty interesting way to present stereo imaging over time and not just have it constant for
the entire track, a detail that counts for a lot. The track however seems to run a bit long
without introducing much more material and in the end it's too burdensome for me to drag out
of the heap.

This release is a hefty chunk of noise but one that makes me question if it's really unique
and original enough to drag around with me. If you need a solid chunk of noise or are just a
big fan of either of the artists you can't really go wrong with it, but if your looking for
something that is different and has a lot of care and detail put into it I'd say save your
money.
