Beautiful pianosounds introduce Heimkehr with "Daemmerung". "Am Morgen" lets us hear pure neofolk, with acoustic instrumentation, very much in the vein of Dies Natalis, which is not surprising since Seelenthron is a project led by the ex-Dies Natalis members Alexander Meier and Norbert Strahl. Especially in the piece "Der Tag" we hear as well a use of percussion which resembles the style that we know of Dies Natalis. The atmosphere is, like so often in neofolk, one of melancholy and nostalgia. In the dramatic tense malencholic "Im Lauf Der Zeiten" this really works very well, and this is one of the strongest tracks on Heimkehr as well. The atmosphere is further enhanced by pictures and photographs in the artwork in which an archaic imagery is invoked of innocence, a return to memories of early childhood and harmony with nature. The dark side of the theme is of course the ultimate return, which is death. This is enhanced auditively, not only by the sound of thunder and rainshowers, but also by sacral sounding moments in most notably the titletrack "Seelenthron" at the end of the recording. It is all a bit cliche, but it is nice and of a high quality. Heimkehr is filled with pure folksongs, songs that create a pleasurable atmosphere, with which is nothing wrong.
