BODYSNATCHER is an atypical band, at the junction of styles and
times, and unites variousmusical influences with a deep taste
for cinema. Electro sequences will remind of Violator (Depeche
Mode), guitar riffs talk about The Cure, the sometimes crooning
voice ranges from sensuality to agressivity, on a groovy melodic
bassline.
A tincture of the 80's is present in the music, concretised by
an original and very successful cover of "Ghost Rider" from
Suicide (duet with Chelsea from Norma Loy). But the Ninth Floor
is not a "last on line", past-dwelling album, it imposes its own
esthetic vision of music, a subtle proportion of "mid-tempo"
Trip-Hop and Electro-Rock-mixed New-Wave, enhanced with jazzy
vibes and old movie samples.
Every Bodysnatcher song (name comes from Robert Wise's work) was
conceived as the illustration of an imaginary "scene de genre",
recalling the memory of the live bands which, as they played
during the first silent movies projections, underlied and
intensified the atmospheres and the actor's parts.

wellknown of British Charts, and guitarist/vocalist with rock
band 'Vertigo Angels'.

Mahakali is an Indian goddess, the feminized version of Mahakala or Death. Often considered
a destroyer goddess in the Hindu tradition and a greater form of the goddess Ka-li-,
Mahakali is often depicted as a sort of warrior mother fighting against hostile forces. She
is the Mother Divine.
Perhaps post-punk vocalist Jarboe is another sort of destroyer goddess. After 14 years in
front of musical pioneers Swans, her solo career has twisted and turned down darkened
hallways and attractive mountaintops with little consideration given to how things appear or
how things seem. Instead, Jarboe's consideration was entirely focused on The Real.
From a milieu of diversity, including snake-handling rituals in the Mississippi delta as a
little one and parents who served in the FBI, Jarboe sprang out with a folklore all her own.
As she grew into an artist, her ideals of connectivity and united experience never wavered.
Coming after the release of her intense collaboration with Jesu's Justin K. Broadrick on J2,
Jarboe's MahaKali is an epic journey built around themes of power, restraint, control, and
destruction.
Jarboe's penchant for using her voice to embody various characters bleeds life all over
MahaKali. This is less a concept album and more an experience album, leading the listener
along a path less traveled. With many similar records, the path less traveled is less
traveled for a reason. Such is not the case here, as the versatile vocalist has assembled a
collection of tracks of inconceivable importance and significance.
The journey of MahaKali swirls and winds through fabrics of metal, noise, ambience, and
orchestral arrangements. By enlisting the likes of Philip Anselmo of Pantera and Attila
Csihar of Mayhem, Jarboes collective of instrumentalists and power players extends its
depth and range considerably. The resulting squall is ferocious yet elegant.
MahaKali, of terrifying countenance introduces us to the squall with large textures of
sound, unfolding with simple keys over a foggy surface. It is serene, yet something
doubtlessly lurks below the water willing to suck us in for all were worth. Such is the
mystique of Jarboe: there is always something more. As she unleashes her eclectic vocals on
the track, the surface gives way to something paranormal, something intoxicating.
For some, this type of "performance art" music may seem little more than a pretentious
excuse to put out a record. But there is a profound story to tell here, once which embodies
the spirit of destruction when crossed with a gentle spirit of restraint. Jarboe intrepidly
explores the range, allowing her voice to serve as a weapon at times and, at other times, to
serve as a great comfort to the listener.
"The House of Void" is over eight minutes of staggering depth, capturing the post-punk sound
that many will find familiar. But as per usual, surprises lurk underneath the floor.
Csihar's contribution on "The Soul Continues" features a demonic growl and a truly
terrifying musical environment, offering up legitimately frightening chills that left me
waiting for Hell to swallow me up. Jarboe's vocals offset the darkness, but just barely.
Anselmo appears on the acoustic-driven "Overthrown", a glorious duet that has a
spine-chilling perimeter highlighted by a spoken word portion. And "Transmogrification" is a
drone-tinged track that features a small voice calling out from the murky depths.
On a practical level, Jarboe's MahaKali just might be the perfect soundtrack for setting up
your haunted house this Halloween. On a musical and perhaps spiritual level, it is so much
more than a fear-provoking soundscape. It is a chronicle, a fable, a progression, a
nightmare, a theory, a way of life, and a fucking awesome piece of work.

Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry actually manage to out-shimmer the
Cocteau Twins on this 1987 release, which finds their beautiful
minimalism adorned with increasingly developed compositional genius. The
cascading melodies that grace "Summoning of the Muse" and "Persephone"
are tailor-made for that next Christmas or Winter Solstice celebration,
while more conventional (albeit somewhat somber) pop tracks like
"Xavier" and "Anywhere Out of the World" keep the going from getting too
arcane. All in all, more fun than a barrel of goths.

Listening to Dead Can Dance is a transcendental experience. Enriched
with dedications to the living Gaia, their creations subsist in natural

Long before No Doubt brought back ska and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
resurrected swing, Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry were making music that
recalled an earlier time. How early? Try the Renaissance. Everything
old--really old--is new again on Aion, the band's fifth and arguably
finest album. Like DCD's other discs, Aion revolves around the interplay
between Gerrard's soaring glossolalia and Perry's baritone crooning. A
range of styles are explored, from the polyphonic choral heights of "The

Rising from the ashes of legendary British post-punks Joy
Division, New Order triumphed over tragedy to emerge as one of

1985s Low-Life further proved the bands talent for creating

20th Century Masters offers up a straightforward run through Siouxsie &
the Banshees' greatest hits, effectively boiling the Once/Twice Upon a
Time singles collections down to one disc. It's a well-executed job, as
well -- without a keen memory for every U.K. single the band released,
it's difficult to pinpoint where the omissions fall. From "Hong Kong
Garden" to "Face to Face," the entire spellbinding scope of Bansheedom
is laid bare and, if the later years (from "Peek A Boo" onwards) receive
short shrift, then that is only as it should be. The innovation that
shone through the band's earliest singles was a rare gift indeed; 20th
Century Masters allows everyone to share in it, and at a budget price,
as well!

Probably one of the albums on Ad Noiseam which took the longest to complete. Begun years ago, Mad EP's fourth full length album sees this highly praised musician focus on low frequencies and everything which comes with them. Syncopated beats, guest vocals by Shadow Huntaz, MC Equivalant and others and the multi instrumentation which has made Mad EP famous are all brought back on this artists's heaviest and most direct album to date
Four years have passed since Mad EP's "Eating Movies", which have been four very busy years. Not only has Matthew Peters (Mad EP also released two 12" on Ad Noiseam ("When I'm 6" and "Ultrafood with Raoul Sinier), but he also delivered two more full length albums ("Not Afraid Of Spiders" on Hymen and the huge "Madlands Trilogy" on Ad Noiseam) and, finally, he took the time to write what should be considered as the definitive Mad EP album to date, Bass.hed
