Originally planned as a set of improvisations, this album by Espers
cellist Helena Espvall and Ghost's Masaki Batoh evolved into a project
that combined free, instant composition with reinterpretations of
traditional Scandinavian folk songs and brand new compositions. There's a
very liberated feel to the formatting of the album, with Espvall not only
taking up cello, but often singing in her native Swedish, occasionally
playing guitar and banjo too. Masaki Batoh mans the electric guitar, and
generally fills in the blanks left by Espvall, occasionally stepping up to
the mic himself, as on the excellent 'Zeranium' and the duo's
particularly bizarre rendering of Son House's classic Delta blues, 'Death
Letter', which is turned into some sort of medievalised psych jam
complete with bizarre '70s-style vocal effects. The scattershot nature of
the project prevents it from taking on a concentrated, conventional
album narrative, but these two musicians are unfailing in their delivery
of artfully rendered, experimental song.
